Well, the shitshow known as 2018 is over. Unfortunately, it seems like politics in 2019 are going to be just as infuriating. For now, let us take a look at the good and the bad of 2018 in politics. Be warned; the good list is pretty damn short because there wasn’t much to pick from.
Worst Use of the “Free Market”- Big Tech
As I wrote here, Big Tech stepped their game up a few notches. Twitter, Facebook, Google, and Apple all ratcheted up both the censorship and the propaganda. Twitter rolled out new rules, completely blanking many accounts from existence via shadowbanning (including mine). Apple was perfectly happy to pump propaganda directly to your home screen via their absurdly liberal News App and ban historically accurate games, and Google (and YouTube) made sure via their ranking algorithms that conservative news and video were ranked far lower than their liberal counterparts. Meanwhile, conservatives made sure to let us know that this was all fine and dandy since if we didn’t like it, we could just create our own platform due to the fantastic “free market.” Which leads me to:
Worst “Conservation” Effort of all Time: NeverTrump
Personally, I thought the entire point of “conservatism” was actually to conserve values and freedoms. Instead, the conservatives this year trashed Trump and his MAGA agenda worse than ever before, with some even going so far as to ally themselves with the left to preserve some semblance of relevancy.
Worst Use of Military Power: Neocons and Warmongering
Nothing unites the establishment of both sides quite like some good old fashioned world policing. Watching the left, which used to be the “peace and love” crew go into full-on ground war in Syria mode was astonishing to watch. All of a sudden, if Trump wanted out of a war, then both right and left went apoplectic, writing think piece after piece about why we needed to stay. Just remember: no matter who is in charge, the Military Industrial Complex always wins.
Worst Use of Sanity: Democrats in general
Coming from the Clinton Era as I do, where Democrats appeared at least marginally sane on topics such as immigration and jobs, these modern Democrats have gone full bore into identity politics, harassment, open borders, and banning guns. The far left has taken over a once semi-reasonable party and turned it into a nuthouse.
Worst Character Assassination Attempts: Ronny Jackson and Brett Kavanaugh
It turns out, hearsay from like, 30 years ago with zero evidence or corroboration is enough to nearly ruin you. The Democrats put on the full court press trying to destroy as many Trump appointees as possible, hoping for a more malleable appointee. They failed on Kavanaugh but set the blueprint for how every serious Republican will be treated going forward. Expect to see a lot more of this in the coming years.
Worst Fake News Awards:
This one had a huge amount of contenders, but realize one thing: Not one single piece of fake news was in Trump’s favor, which serves to illustrate the degree of bias in the media. Here’s a few notable winners:
Trump signing MAGA hats for the troops
Nikki Haley’s curtains
Kids in cages from the Obama era
Melania conspiracy theories regarding surgery and shoes
Ivanka’s emails (despite not being classified, unlike Hillary)
Time’s crying child cover (unrelated to anything regarding Trump)
Worst Propaganda Effort Award: Hollywood
Hollywood went completely into Trump Derangement Syndrome mode this year. Typically, their propaganda efforts are sort of under the radar, and you have to root for some subtext, maybe read a think piece or two to find the message. Not this year. This year, Hollywood slammed it in your face regularly with zero subtlety. TV was especially egregious, seemingly every other episode regurgitating the same messages and anti-Trump jokes. Hollywood, coupled with the media, worked overtime to invent a reality that the country is horrible, and it’s all your fault.
Worst Use of Education: American Universities
Ok, I’m well aware colleges have been a breeding ground for liberal garbage for quite some time, but 2018 was the year they turned into a complete dumpster fire. From full on occupations (the Evergreen insanity), to giving students credit for protesting, and to outright teaching communism and socialism, these places have become indoctrination camps. Watch as your perfectly normal and healthy child turns into a raving lunatic after one semester in these “safe space” institutions. A complete and utter embarrassment to our society.
Now that the majority of the trash is out of the way did anything good happen politically? Let’s take a look.
Best Use of Media: Long Form Conversation
As atrocious as the media was this year, we did witness an uptick in the viability of the long form conversation. Podcasts especially allowed for significant dialogue between people that wouldn’t usually be on TV together for more than 5 minutes, instead giving us in some cases, hours of content. People like Joe Rogan, Sam Harris, Ben Shapiro, and others brought us, instead of short arguments and talking over one another, actual conversations with people who-gasp-disagree with one another.
Best Time to Get the Hell Out: Retiring Establishment
Paul Ryan, Jeff Flake, Bob Corker, and others threw in the towel this year, hopefully clearing the way for more politicians that support a MAGA agenda. They all saw the writing on the wall that there was no way they’d get re-elected in a party that has now been taken over by Trumpist politics.
Best Use of Media: One America News Network
Every single mainstream outlet for news is complete trash, including Fox. I started watching OANN over the last two months, and the difference is astonishing. First off, there are no commercials, which in and of itself is extraordinary. Instead, they take periodic breaks to give a history lesson, which is refreshing, to say the least. Secondly, they are closer to “hard news” than any network on the planet. It felt so odd to watch many of their segments and not be told what to think or see two people shouting over one another chasing ratings. Sure, they are pro-Trump, but their actual news is closer to fact-based reporting than anything in the modern era.
Best Use of American Power: Reworking Trade
Make no mistake, as it currently stands, China will be the dominant economic power on the planet in a few years. Thus, we have limited time to set the pieces in motion to retain economic superiority, and this year, we saw a lot of moves to stymie China, and get back some of the jobs we lost and get trade deficits under control.
So there you have it, the colossal trash heap of 2018 politics is over, though I believe it entirely likely that 2019 will be worse, and God help us in 2020 when there’s another Presidential campaign. If you thought this year was terrible, buckle up, because 2019 going forward is going to be pure insanity.
