“A different language is a different vision of life.” -Federico Fellini
Language is the foundation of social cohesion. Whether you believe the Biblical account of the Tower of Babel, or a scientific process whereby humans separated themselves according to race, nationality, and language, either way the result is the same. Humans have always sought togetherness with those that bear similar traits. Without language, it is nearly impossible to interact with another person to determine if you share the same values, or to build any relationship whatsoever.
Therefore, it is utterly baffling that we in America have not only not attempted to have our populace speak the same language, but we actively deride those who would even propose such a “racist” policy. Every time someone raises the topic of making English the national language, people storm out of the woodwork crying about how racist it is to encourage that people speak English in this country.
Let me be unambiguous here: There is nothing racist about wanting to communicate effectively with those in your community.
What we have effectively done in this country is encourage diversity, for diversity’s sake alone. The left would have us believe that it is beneficial to bring in those of different cultures, then make no effort to integrate or assimilate them into our culture, values, and language. Whenever the topic of immigration is raised, two statements invariably surface from those on the left:
1. Diversity is our strength.
2. Immigrants made America great.
These statements are usually then followed by a comprehensive list of immigrants that made America great, such as:
Titans of industry and science:
1. Albert Einstein
2. Steve Jobs
3. Madeleine Albright
4. Andrew Carnegie
5. Henry Kissinger
Culturally significant figures:
1. Hakeem Olajuwon
2. Natalie Portman
3. Wyclef Jean
4. Arnold Schwarzenegger
5. Neil Young
Of course, that does not include the innumerable doctors, scientists, and many others from different cultures. Obviously that is but a tiny sampling, yet here is the one thing the left always leaves out of the discussion:
Every single person on those lists and every successful immigrant spoke English.
Therein lies the most colossal fabrication: Diversity is not a strength and never was. Assimilation into American values was the strength. Diversity for diversity’s sake leads to one thing: a fracturing of social cohesion. Without assimilation into a country’s national values, you end up with enclaves of those attempting to be with others like them, establishing a “country within a country.” When one cannot even communicate, we have no way of knowing whether we share values, and there’s no opportunity to find a commonality.
Let me say it one more time: Language is the foundation of social cohesion.
Don’t believe me? Let’s look at a few countries that have a single dominant language and let me know if you notice a trend.
If you didn’t find the commonality, let me break it down: Those countries have infinitesimal violent crime, and all are doing quite well economically. They also have multiple languages, yet only one is dominant. Sure, some like China have variants, but in that case Mandarin is by far the dominant language. Iceland, for example, is one of my favorite examples. The left always loves to trot out Iceland or other nordic countries as some sort of paradise, an exemplar for us to aspire to. There’s only one problem: those countries overwhelmingly speak one language. In Iceland, every single citizen speaks Icelandic. Every single one. Here’s another: Japan. Virtually no crime, and an economic powerhouse relative to size. Guess what they speak? 99.10% Japanese. Many of the most war-torn countries on earth have, sometimes dozens of languages.
There’s always the stereotype of the old white guy getting angry at the cable company or ATM because the menu asked if he wanted the options in English or Spanish. This is another scenario the left trots out with staggering regularity as an example of how racist old white people are.
Let me say this again: it is utter lunacy for a country to make no attempt to enable their populace to communicate with one another. I understand the reasoning behind immigration’s goal of finding the best talent from around the globe. There’s one problem though: an infinitesimal percentage of immigrants will become great in this country without the ability to speak English. Sure, there will always be outliers like the occasional MMA or WWE world champion, but generally, no immigrant has attained a high level of success outside of sports without English. Yet, the left would have us believe that we should just import millions of people with completely divergent cultures, values, and yes, languages, and expect them to assimilate without issue. This is the utopian fantasy land the left believes is possible without creating tribalism and division.
If we are to have an immigration system at all (which I’ve written before that we shouldn’t) then it has to be LEGAL. Simply put, anyone that goes through the entire system over the course of years in some cases, is far more likely to already know, or be willing, to learn English. When we allow millions of people with different cultures into the country that don’t even attempt to learn English, we are concocting a recipe for failure. Frankly, it only goes to show how far we’ve drifted to the left that this opinion is even controversial, as it is obvious that without language we simply cannot form unity without commonality. It’s ironic we are called the UNITED States, when we make no attempt to assimilate people via the one thing that is absolutely required to do so: language.
Not only should English be the national language, it should have been decades ago.
