In taking stock of all the things that occurred in 2017, it helps to look back and see what we thought it was going to be like. This is the point where I take a victory lap, as my version of the forthcoming events bore a lot more resemblance to reality than did the version of my various counterparts on the left.
We were assured, with a high degree of certainty, that the following things were going to happen:
1. Authoritarian regime with Hitler-esqe internment camps for gays.
2. Deportation forces would round up 11 million illegal aliens.
3. Women would lose all rights and be breeding vehicles.
4. Markets would crash and 401ks would be devastated.
5. Nuclear war due to mental instability. “Finger on the button”.
6. Mueller would be fired, causing a constitutional crisis.
7. Russia would be let off the hook and sanctions lifted.
8. We would be engaged in trade wars all over the world.
9. People would be dying in the streets due to lack of health care.
For those on the left, now maybe it’s time to admit you were wrong about virtually everything, just like you were on Election Day. You see, we (Trump supporters) knew a long time ago that progressives were (and still are) inside of a mass hysteria bubble. Every time some leftist claimed any one of the things from the above list was imminent, we just rolled our eyes, sighed, and laughed. Or made fun of them on Twitter as I did. Also, I’m quite sure that a large number of people on the left were absolutely, positively certain that he’d be gone by now. I remember tweets and articles in the opening months of the year assuring us he was to be impeached any day now.
What do we have instead?
1. Isis is all but destroyed, losing virtually all of its land.
2. Markets have exploded.
3. Consumer and business confidence have skyrocketed.
4. Illegal immigration is down dramatically.
5. Taxes getting lower.
6. Unemployment at record lows.
7. Some manufacturing returning.
8. Russian sanctions still in place and we armed Ukraine.
9. Mueller is still in place.
10. Women have the same rights as men. (Still)
Things aren’t perfect and there’s still a lot to do, but I’d like to think the Mass Hysteria bubble has lost a little air. Every day that he does some non-Hitler activity it deflates just a little bit more. I don’t expect left wingers to like any of what he’s doing, but their vision of the Trump Apocalypse is not going to happen. There’s a big difference in not liking Republican style governance or mean tweets, and the level of Apocalypse we’ve been assured was right around the corner.
Sometimes I like a good laugh, and I revert over to the liberal list I have on Twitter, and watch the hysteria. The same people that were in the fetal position on election night are still assuring us that any minute now, it’s all going to catch up to him. We are just a day away from this nightmare coming to an end. The reality is that Donald Trump isn’t Hitler. He’s governing like an American Republican president, which I realize is horrific in and of itself to some people. People got used to a left of center America where transgender bathrooms, mediocre economy, and appeasing dictators are the norm. There is going to be an adjustment period, and even though there’s still hysteria, it has muted comparatively. Things like lowering taxes, deregulation, law enforcement, and strong military have all been republican principles for a long time, and aren’t indicative of some crazy fascistic government as the left would have us believe.
Now, I keep seeing from prominent left wingers charts and graphs about how much he played golf this year. I have to be honest, I don’t care in the least. Last I checked you do get time off from a job once in awhile, and if his year 2 is the quality of the first, then he have all the golf he wants. Heck, he can have two weeks of golf straight just for the constant triggering he delivers to the left from his Twitter account. Now, I’m sure someone out there is saying to themselves something like “You conservatives were apoplectic when Obama golfed!” And that is totally true. That’s because we felt that the country was not going in the right direction, thus golfing while the ship sinks is a bad idea. Look, If you have a business, and it’s going under while you sit on the golf course, that’s a problem. If the business is running like clockwork and breaking records, then knock yourself out.
I anticipate a lot of golf in his future, because he (and thus America) will be crushing it, just like he did in 2017.
